Andy Ogles nominated as GOP candidate for Maury County mayor

Andy Ogles, the former Americans for Prosperity director for Tennessee who briefly launched a campaign for the U.S. Senate last year, was nominated to become Maury County mayor at a county GOP convention Saturday, reports the Columbia Daily Herald. Three other candidates for the office are running as independents.

Ogles was planning to challenge U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., for his seat until Corker announced he was not running. When U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn announced her candidacy, Ogles withdrew and supported her.

“Maury County faces major fiscal issues in the coming years, and I think I am the candidate to solve them,” Ogles told The Daily Herald moments after his nomination.

Ogles was nominated by state Rep. Sheila Butt, R-Columbia. He will face at least three candidates in the Aug. 2 general election, County Mayor Charlie Norman, County Commissioner Sonny Shackleford and U.S. Army veteran Amanda Kelton.

Known as a conservative activist, Ogles most recently was the head of Americans For Prosperity in Tennessee. He lives in Culleoka.

…Norman, Sheriff Bucky Rowland and County Clerk Joey Allen, declined to participate and will run for re-election with no party affiliation.

The local GOP chose candidates for the general election for the first time with a nominating convention. County residents who voted in three of the previous four GOP primaries were eligible to participate. Instead of paying $35,000 for a primary, the GOP picked candidates with a show of hands at the Memorial Building in Columbia.

A state-record 122 voters turned out for the convention, Chairman Scott Cepicky said.

If incumbents had sought the nomination and the right to put “R” next to their name on the Aug. 2 ballot, the candidate would have been ineligible to pursue the office as an independent.

…Cepicky said a nominating convention allows voters to choose candidates with similiar political values.

…“He is distinguished and he helped with some of the problems we’ve had [in county government] in the last four years.”

Maury County will be in good hands if Andy wins this election.

Folks don’t put BIG money in any office. Be ready for a BIG,BIG TRAIN WRECK WHEN YOU DO.Folks big money votes so you must vote to stop them. Randy Travis said it best in his song I TOLD YOU SO. People don’t say my vote doesn’t count, BIG MONEY loves to hear that . Guess what that’s how They get back in office and you’re taken to the clearners again. Wake up voters. We have Big money beat jut vote. Term limits is a joke. Just vote out who is running for re-election. Thanks. Also anybody but Judd Matheny for Congress. Again Big Money have all lobbyist, special interest, and big money in their pocket to make all the las. Do you actually believe the people you put into office are making the laws? The legislators on Capital Hill in Nashville are making a retirement and medical .package for themselves. Hey they ain’t worried about you. Illegals are getting more than you are free and guess what we are paying for and our legislators ain’t doing a thing about and they aren’t going to. Drain the HILL. Wake up Folks.

Charlie Norman. Ogles, Carr, Beavers are all desperate to have a seat somewhere. Those three have demonstrated in failed campaigns that no one wants them other than the fringe far right. Norman should be encouraged with Butts endorsement of Ogles.

Almost went to that thing, but I got sidetracked. Locally, I prefer to vote for people who are actually from Maury County and have roots here. So I won’t vote for Ogles. Containing growth that is destroying quality of life is my number one priority. Look at Mother Nature on the run. “They” destroy one place and move on/flee to the next while pretending they aren’t the profiteers and/or enablers.

Tommy, I wish I COULD vote for Judd Matheny for Congress. I would!!

  • The mention of Ogles affiliation with the AFP / Koch brothers and “dark money” in the enclosed website makes me uncomfortable about electing him to represent Maury County. A native resident would likely serve our best interest. The article is dated September 14, 2017 but I can’t imagine much has changed in the past 9 months.
