Former Ag Comish John Rose, longtime Diane Black supporter, files in 6th Congressional District

John Rose, a Cookeville business executive who served as state agriculture commissioner during former Gov. Don Sundquist’s administration, has filed the paperwork to run for the 6th Congressional District seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Diane Black, reports the Nashville Post.

Rose is president of Boson Software, an information technology training software company…. and he owns one of the state’s oldest working farms, established in Smith County in 1790 prior to the formal existence of Tennessee.

Rose told The Tennessean earlier this month that he was “praying about it and talking about it with people in the district.”…  With the FEC filing, it seems likely the decision has been made, although multiple voicemails seeking comment from Rose were not returned.

…He will face state Rep. Judd Matheny of Tullahoma and Cookeville blogger Christopher B. Monday in the Republican primary. Other candidates are rumored likely to join the race.

According to the filing, Rose has signed on Les Williamson as campaign treasurer. Williamson was a finance aide for former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s presidential campaign and has also done fundraising work for the National Republican Senatorial Committee under former Black staffer Ward Baker’s leadership.

…Rose donated $2,700, the maximum allowed per election, to Black’s reelection campaign last year. He has also donated to Black in previous election cycles and has been a reliable GOP donor over the years, according to FEC records. Rose co-founded information technology certification company Transcender Corp. in 1992, which sold in 2000 for $60 million, according to The Tennessean.

Rose is currently on the board of the Tennessee Tech University Foundation and is the chair of the Tennessee State Fair Association.

Note: He’s also the brother of Rhedona Rose, executive vice president of the Tennessee Farm Bureau Federation, who has for years led the farmers’ lobbying efforts at the legislature.
