Roe still pondering whether to seek reelection; to decide in week or so

U.S. Rep. Phil Roe told the Kingsport Times News  Tuesday that he still hasn’t decided whether to seek reelection to a sixth term representing Northeast Tennessee in Congress but will do so “in the next week to 10 days.”

“I always said from the very beginning I was going to stay (in Congress) 10 or 12 years, five to six terms,” Roe, R-Tenn., said before speaking to a Greater Kingsport Republican Women’s luncheon.

Roe was first elected in 2008 after defeating incumbent U.S. Rep. David Davis in the 1st Congressional District Republican primary. A retired obstetrician/gynecologist, Roe chairs the House Committee on Veterans Affairs and co-chairs the House GOP Doctors’ Caucus.

As of Sept. 30, 2017, his campaign account reported having more than $480,000 cash on hand.

If Roe does seek re-election, he’ll have opposition in the Republican primary from Todd McKinley. Dr. Martin Olsen, an East Tennessee State University ObGyn professor and medical practitioner, has announced his intent to run for the Democratic nomination.

Note: Roe, 72, had some notable personal experiences during 2017. He was diagnosed and treated for early stage prostrate cancer, reporting in August that scans showed he was “cancer free.” He also was married to the former Clarinda Jeanes, who is Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Mike Kelly’s wife’s sister. His first wife, Pam, died two years earlier and Jeanes’ husband died in 2012

  • Stuart I. Anderson says:

Tepid conservative Roe with his anemic lifetime Heritage Action score of 68 is the most liberal Republican in the House of Representatives. Please, Roe, GO!!!

Sorry, I misspoke. Actually, it should read “. . .is the most liberal Republican [from Tennessee] in the House of Representatives.” But the sentiment expressed remains the same “Please, Roe, GO”!!!
