Sundquist backs Jimmy Matlock in 2nd Congressional District Republican primary

Former Gov. Don Sundquist, who earlier endorsed Randy Boyd in the governor’s race and Marsha Blackburn for U.S. Senate, is now backing state Rep. Jimmy Matlock in the 2nd Congressional District Republican primary, reports Tennessee Star.

The Star posts a copy of a fundraiser for Matlock, to be held in Knoxville on June 18, with outgoing Republican U.S. Rep. John J. “Jimmy” Duncan Jr. and Sundquist listed as special guests supporting the state representative – along with their wives. Suggested minimum contribution is $500 per person.

And, naturally, the right-wing website throws in some commentary critical of Sundquist. Excerpt:

The income tax is not the only political baggage that Don Sundquist drags along with him when he endorses a candidate. Illegal immigration is a top concern among Republican primary voters in Tennessee and nationally, and Diane Black is under fire for her vote to give driver’s licenses to illegals in 2001.  Meanwhile, it is worth noting that Sundquist was the Governor who actually signed the legislation granting drivers’ licenses to illegals in Tennessee.

“Between Sundquist’s support for a state income tax and his push for drivers licenses for illegals, both of which were strenuously opposed by conservative Republicans at the time and which remain contentious issues, it is hard to see the political strategy of making him the face of a Republican Primary campaign this cycle,” Tennessee Star Political Editor Steve Gill pointed out.

Duncan earlier announced his endorsement of Matlock, who is opposed in the GOP primary by Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett and others.

Don’s got one right for a change! Good for him!

  • Bob Miles says:

It looks like Jimmy Matlock will except a donation from anyone, regardless if he tried to force a state income tax on Matlock’s constituents. Then there is the Boyd-Matlock connection. Why would Matlock’s wife and son give $3,500 to Randy Boyd? There’s more, why would Matlock take donations from the past leader of the TN Democratic Party? The same guy who’s business phone number was used in a phone robo call against Burchett.

Jimmy’s is one of the staunchest conservatives in the General Assembly who has been in the legislature since 2007 during which time he compiled an American Conservative Union lifetime score of 93%. That’s a rich conservative record that merits promotion to the U. S. House of Representatives.

Thanks for telling me about Matlock’s wife and son. Please remind me again about their contributions if ever they should decide to run for public office because you are right to question their judgement and conservative bona fides. As for donations from Democrats, that is curious but easily overlooked in the case of Matlock with his over a decade of public votes in the State House and his 93% rating. Now on the other hand you take John Rose who is running for Congress in the 6th District who is a No Record Candidate running with the heavy support of the centrist/tepid conservative wing of the Republican Party who has the financial support from members of the Bone family who are the heaviest of heavy hitters in the Tennessee Democratic Party – that’s a much more weighty fact for voters in the 6th District to consider.

And Matlock voted FOR an Article V Constitutional Convention. Shame on him.

  • Steve L. says:

Sundquist put Bredesen in office. Really do not care what he thinks, whom he likes, and what he believes to be the best direction for Tennessee. I predict this will have zero impact on Tim’s campaign.

  • Bruce T Williams says:

The Tennesseee Star is no longer worth reading
And Steve Gills defense of Burchett’s voting record (
As well as his deplorable life style ) is unbelievable . After all his deciding vote
Put a dem in as lt gov and if he had voted republican
Then Ron Ramsey would have been lt Governor !

  • Tommy Ray Mc Anally says:

I WOULD RUN LIKE HELL IF SUNDQUIST WAS ANYWHERE NEAR ME! ALSO, ANYBODY BUT JUDD MATHENY HE SCREWED THE ALL VETERANS OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE HB 2384 Vetereans Preference Pass Over LETTER. I WOULD LIKE TO THANK JOHN RAGAN FOR SCREWING THE VETERANS ALSO.
