TN sheriff gets prison time for having sex with women jail inmates, beating male inmate

Former Fentress County Sheriff Charles S. “Chucky” Cravens was sentenced to two years, nine months in prison Wednesday by U.S. District Court Judge Aleta Trauger of Nashville, reports The Tennessean.

I do take responsibility for my actions,” he told the judge, hands folded behind his Wranglers. “What I done, I done it myself.”

Trauger sentenced him to the federal prison term for three counts of honest services wire fraud and a count of deprivation of rights. The prison time will be followed by 2 years of supervised release.

Court papers say Cravens, 47, used his authority to solicit sex from women in the 150-person jail he supervised. Documents say Cravens, who later resigned his job as sheriff, slept with three women inmates since July, and then gave them special treatment in exchange.

Trauger said those acts could not be characterized as “anything but horrendous.”

The final count count stems from an incident in November, when court papers say Cravens kicked an inmate, handcuffed him and then punched the inmate twice in the back of the head.

Note: Previous post on Cravens HERE. Cravens is the third former Tennessee sheriff recently sentenced for felony crimes committed while in office (joining Gibson County’s Chuck Arnold and Rutherford County’s Robert Arnold). A fourth, Bradley County Sheriff Eric Watson has been indicted and is awaiting trial while still in office. (Post on Watson HERE.)

I think when all is said and done, Eric Watson is going to make these other guys look like Boy Scouts.

I resent the Tennessean and the News Sentinel using the euphemisms “sentenced for sleeping with 3” and “slept with three women inmates.” It might save some victims if the media reported rape as rape.
